Behind the Seams: What Goes Into a New Collection

Behind the Seams: What Goes Into a New Collection

When you browse a new clothing collection — whether online or in-store — it might seem like the pieces appeared overnight, ready to wear, beautifully styled, and perfectly curated. But the truth is, every collection is the result of months (sometimes years) of planning, designing, testing, refining, and collaborating. There’s a whole world that happens behind the seams.

In this post, we’re giving you a peek behind the curtain — into the creative, technical, and emotional journey that brings a collection to life.

1. Inspiration: It All Starts with a Feeling

Every collection begins with a spark — a mood, a place, a memory, or even a social shift. Our design team often starts by asking, “What do we want people to feel when they wear this?” From there, we build a concept: maybe it’s coastal minimalism, urban energy, or the softness of slowing down.

We gather textures, colors, historical references, art, and photography to create a mood board. This becomes the visual DNA of the collection — a compass that guides everything from fabric choice to final silhouette.

2. Design: From Sketches to Concepts

With the concept locked in, our designers move to the sketchpad. Every piece begins as a hand- or digitally-drawn sketch. At this stage, we’re experimenting — balancing form and function, visual impact and wearability.

Once we narrow down the designs, we create technical flats — detailed, to-scale line drawings that guide pattern makers and production teams. These include information like seam placements, stitch types, zipper details, and fit notes.

3. Fabric & Materials: Choosing with Intention

Fabric isn’t just the medium — it’s the message. For every collection, we carefully source materials that align with our values: comfort, quality, sustainability, and durability.

Whether we’re selecting organic cotton, recycled poly, or ethically sourced wool, this step involves multiple rounds of sourcing, testing, and sampling. We assess everything — drape, stretch, breathability, and how it behaves after washing.

We often say, “If it doesn’t feel good in your hands, it won’t feel good on your skin.”

4. Sampling & Fittings: The Real Test

Once fabrics and patterns are finalized, we create prototypes — the very first versions of each garment. These samples are fitted on real people, not just mannequins, to ensure they move well, sit right, and feel as good as they look.

Fittings are where the magic (and the frustration) happens. A hem might be too sharp. A collar might collapse. A sleeve might restrict movement. We revise again and again until it feels effortless — that’s when we know it’s right.

5. Production: From Studio to Shop

Once we’ve approved final samples, we enter the production phase. This means grading the patterns into all sizes, sourcing trims (zippers, buttons, labels), and preparing tech packs for our manufacturing partners.

We work closely with factories we trust — ones that align with our standards for ethical labor and environmental care. Every piece is produced in limited runs to minimize waste and maintain quality.

Before anything ships, our team performs quality control checks on each batch to ensure everything meets our standards — in fit, feel, and finish.

6. Launch & Storytelling: Bringing It to You

A collection doesn’t end when the garments are made — that’s just the start of its next life. We work with photographers, stylists, and content creators to capture the spirit of the line.

Every campaign we launch is more than a lookbook — it’s a story. We want you to know not just what you’re wearing, but why it was made.

Final Threads

Creating a collection isn’t easy — and we wouldn’t want it to be. The challenge is what makes the outcome meaningful. From ideation to launch, every garment carries a story of design, dedication, and craftsmanship.

So next time you slip into one of our pieces, know that it’s more than fabric and thread — it’s months of thought, collaboration, and care woven into something you can live in.
